Description
Anton Sauer, born in Austria and original owner of Sauer Castle, first occupied the mansion in 1872. Five generations of Sauers have since lived there, along with many deaths and tragedies that have occurred on the property over the years. Ghost stories began as early as 1930, and the house has been constantly trespassed and vandalized. In 1988, Carl Lopp, the great, great-grandson of Anthony Sauer, bought the house back into the family with the intention of fixing it up and residing there to keep it in the family, but it is still a work in progress. He hired someone to protect Sauer Castle, but the caretaker was charged with felony theft for stealing 30 thousand dollars worth of artifacts from the house. It is located at 935 Shawnee Road in Kansas City, Kansas. It was placed in the Kansas City, Kansas Historic Landmarks (1987), the Register of Historic Kansas Places (1977) and the National Register of Historic Places (1977).
